Mr. Bob I am very pleased to have possibility to wright to you. May be I am happy. I began to study the jazz history from my middle teens.
The subject is that your music is therapeutic. Not only melody and improvisation is important I think and not only the rythm which you have perfect. There is special thing called aura that you have such a kind.
there are people who have psychiatric problem called "voices". Your music have therapeutic effect. You have to know that, probably you know. I feel that. It becomes from your deep humanity and I feel that instead that I don't know you.
There are compositions in your albums wich contains such a kind voices, don't know is this a child or a girls, such a sweetnes, quietness And there are no words wich sometimes are bothering. It's rest. Thanks.
I'm not a medical man, but I know subject that I describe.
Good luck
Your music makes the world kind.
Thanks a lot!

Dear Mr. James,
I discovered your music when I was looking for the original behind Run-DMC´s "Peter Piper" and bought the Legendary Albums-edition of your first four albums. From then on I was hooked and started to collect your albums (and of course Fourplay).
I am looking forward to the BJ McSwift project. So many hiphop artist have sampled your music. And with this project you go full circle and give hiphop the BJ treatment. I hope you will use a lot of hiphop beats and scratches for this one.
Yours

Have loved your music since your theme for the TV show Taxi. While i cannot claim to have all your albums, i do have you on CD, cassettes and LP's. Fourplay is exellent and isn't TC the best?
Jeff Miller - Friday, August 29th, 2008
MeThinks that was a bit harsh, and I apologize Bob, James and all those who feel I might've come on too strong there.(I'll blame it on too much coffee) Like you all, I'm very passionate about my Bob James music, and I take it mucho seriously. I want it all to be as amazing as Nautilus and the Touchdown LP.
I honestly think 'Bring It On' represents a bold move in a new direction for BJ and I'm totally interested more of this trend, but less smooth. I applaud BJ's ambition to do something different. That's why he's the man. YOU are the original trailblazer, BJ, and one THE pioneers in jazz. I just think you should break free of the constraints of the smooth jazz format that you helped originate. It's begun to define you, rather than you, it, Clearly, you still have an immense amount of potential to your best work yet, as undefined. -JAM
Jeff Miller - Friday, August 29th, 2008
OK, Cap'n BJ, the best part of this new track 'Bring It On', is the first 17.5 seconds of totally classic and promising BJ GOLD, then it descends rapidly back into prdictable, albeit above average smooth Jazz territory. The DJ 'scratch' work sounds sadly dated, like 1997. The drum machine beat is totally smooth-jazz lame, and the sax is WAY too smooth. There's too much piano and Casio keyboard. I really wish you'd just drop all that smooth jazz crap and get all Fender-Rhodes on us again, and if you want to make some seriously dirty DJ grooves, just groove it yourself on the old Electric Piano and sample with Danger Mouse instead or at least take a cue from, Praful. He's actually blazing new trails with his sonic blend of electronic/prog and jazz in a very tasteful, provocative way, when most of the smooth jazz coming out these days is a vast wasteland of safe, predictable, middling beats and superclean grooves. Also listen to Beck's latest and his work with the Dust Bros.

I've been a fan of yours since my highschool days in the 1970s. Listening to WJR from Detroit, I was first turned on to you by listening to Bob James Two. I was actually living in northern Indiana, but was able to pick up WJR there. Since then, I've been a fan. I "DJed" in my hometown, playing your CDs quite often. Continue the creative, fresh take on "jazz" and improvisitional music. Thanks!

Bob - I met your lovely wife on a flight from Detroit to Traverse City tonight. Judy and I talked of many things ("older women" stuff) but she told me about you and your music. I had heard your name recently on a radio ad that had to do with a fund raiser, so when Judy mentioned your name and I recognized it, I decided that after I returned home, I would "google" you. When I heard your music on the internet via RealPlay, I loved it. But as much as I loved your music and admire your accomplishments, I must say that, although we are mutual UM grads and music lovers, I am most impressed by your wife, Judy. You are a very lucky man.

Hey, I think the name BJ McSwift is fantastic! This is what I know and like you for, creativeness. I can't wait to hear this new trio in action. Turntables, Sax, and the Piano wow! Keep making the good music. Are you ever planning on releasing/publishing Angels Of Shangai in South Africa? I would love to hear that album, one of your recent innovations.
Ruben van Coevorden - Thursday, March 6th, 2008
"You're as right as rain", was the very first musical piece of Bob James I ever herad on my radio being up late at night with my head stuck in textbooks for my medical studies. BJ's music really pulled me through! I have bought every single album ever since (From BJ one, Two, Three, four etc.etc.etc). When I visited Japan some 25 years ago I noticed that there would be a concert of BJ in Tokyo. (This was the time that the theme of "Taxi"was released). Immediately I bought tickets and I found myself in a concerthall filled only with Japanese and only 2 "Gayjin", me and an American. The Japanese listened very quietly to BJ's music and the two weterners were the only ones that couldn't sit still. We were having a ball! I had some time to google around and why not googled for my musical hero and lo and behold there was this website! Fantastic!

We will be married 29 years on 3 March 2008, and for our 30th in 2009 we will be looking for a Bob James concert closest to that date. Where ever it is, we will make every attempt to be there. My all time favorite (which you did not play that night) was and still is, "You're As Right As Rain," which my wife is. Keep it up, maybe we will look for your concert around our 40th as well!!

Bob,kudos to you and the Angels of Shanghai for an exquisite musical performance at the IMAC in Huntington,LI on May 5th. You said it all when you commented on stage about how Angela or "The Theme From Taxi" reminded one of the Angels of an old Chinese folk song. I am in wonderment by the universal appeal of your music. The comments from your fan base located in all corners of the world are a testament to this appeal. By fusing your incredible concept of music with the enchantment of the East you have done what few statesmen heretofore have not...brought our divergent cultures together for one harmonious place and space in time. I believe that God lives through us and he(or she)has given you the gift of music to help heal those whose good fortune it is to discover what you have to offer. I am eternally grateful and humbled to be included in this exclusive club for through your constantly evolving music I continue to be inspired to be a good human being. The best of health to you and your family and keep the music coming. I'm all ears!

Hi! I'm a female fan from Puerto Rico. I have known your music since I was 16 yrs. old. (Now I'm 46!). The first album I listen to was "Heads", from a special cousin I have in Mexico that is musician. I fell in love with your music since then. The "Angels of Shanghai" is beautiful, inspirational; I can say, is like "listening to angels." I love the song "Endless time"... When will you come to visit Puerto Rico? Hello Bob it's been a while since I saw you a the North Sea Jazz but the memory is still fresh. I listened a couple c.d's of yours.and a few of Andreas Vollenweider . I wondered why there has never been a connection between the two of you. I think you got a lot in common. But that's only the opinion of a fan who loves the best of both worlds. I see forward to your next album. Manny regards from Winsum (Netherlands).

Dear Mr. James-
I have been listening to you since I was 14 years old. Introduced to your music by my big sista'. I am just a hard working black girl in Northern Cali., but your music has gotten me through so many hard times. Thank you for being Bob James. An amazing person with an incredible talent!!!
p.s.- you probably won't remember but I saw you in San Francisco many years ago and you spoke to my grandmother and she never forgot talking with you. Also, I brought you a nickel from Canada in honor of your alblum "Head". I love you in the right way - not a crazy way, and appreciate all that you do for jazz and music in general. The last time I saw you was at Yoshi's, in Oakland, Ca. When you comin' again?

Hello, I am a civil servant in India and have been so for the past 16 yrs. Have a wife and a kid but suffer from loneliness and melancholia (not very unwelcome) from time to time. Your music has affected and keeps on affecting me very much. I also like Earl Klugh and Lee Ritenour a lot. Please keep on bringing out those masterpieces. I have listened to Urban Flamingo and appreciate it a lot. I dont know whether you'll read this but it makes living worthwhile. Thanks a lot.

Dear Bob, I was first introduced to your unique sound with the obssesion album and can gladly say i've been a fan ever since! I was only 17 or 18 when i got the obssesion album and it changed my life. Ever since then whenever my thoughts become jumbled and life gets a little hectic i just pop in a jazz c.d. and realize that in life you must do one thing at a time! Thank you for helping me to become a thinker!

Bought your "Greatest Hits" CD set about a year & a half ago and since I have a long commute I listen to it often, several times each & everyday. Virtuosity! CD's have come & gone and it's still at the top of my playlist. There is so much going on in each note and it's placement. If I was on a deserted island and could only have one CD, it would be this one...it has taught me how to listen to every other piece of music since, no matter what it is. God Bless you, Bob.
P.S. If you ever make it to Hawaii...please let me know...

Hi Bob, I am truly humbled to be given the chance to leave this message. I have a request - do you have a manuscript copy of "Autumn Nocturne" - I need to learn it as it helped me through a really difficult episode in my life and I would love to play it - I would also like you to have a token of my esteem in return - an album I have recorded with 15 young scottish musicians of my own material and arrangements - scots trad meets the rest of the world!
I would love for you to give me the benefit of your genius with regard to arranging in particular.....enough daydreaming, with best wishes,

Hello Bob, I just wanted to let you know that I have truly been inspired by your music. I can't say that I have been a fan forever considering I've only just recently discovered your musical genius.Although I remember having the taxi theme playing in my head when I was younger, that was the best part of the show. Honestly I wish I had realized your work existed sooner but that just means I now have much to listen to. Your song nautilus is quite possibly the most mezmerizing piece that I've ever heard. Also if you've never heard radiohead's amnesiac album I would definitely recommend it, not that it's similar it just takes you to another mental state just like nautilus. Continue inspiring.

Dear Sir,
Hello from Kuala Lumpur! I hope you all had a great time in our country because we truly enjoyed your show! I am 11 years old and trying my very best to learn more about music. I started my musical journey when I was 3 at Yamaha Junior course. I'm on my fourth grade now in piano and started learning how to play the drums recently. I was first inspired by my uncle Lewis Pragasam and my mother Jasmine who actually sang some of your songs on Jack Lee's show.My sister Izabelle who is 6 years old didn't get to watch your amazing performance because she still too young but we are all familiar with all your CDs because we always play it everytime we go for holiday trips. Now that its school holiday again,we are happy that we will get to hear more from your new album on our next vacation trip! Thank you for making great music like that! Remember her small violin that you signed? She is a great player and singer too. She had her concert on the same stage you had your show. Mom was also featured for the Jazz and world music series last time. I hope to perform in a place like that someday.hopefully with all of you...
Like my mom, I am also involved in tv shows and theatre and was actually successfully chosen for the west end production of Oliver. That was fun! I think your acting on stage was also fantastic. Its amazing how you can be focused and funny at the same time...Awesome!!!!!!!!
I read that you play golf?
I hope you get to swing it after your tour! My handicap is 25 and I hope to play with you when you come down to K.L. again. My golf club is more that a century old and the green course is perfect! Some of the golf giants played there for the Malaysian open. Call me on this no. for a round of golf okay. Please send my regards to the great Sir Harvey and say I'm going to get my drumset this month...Hooraay
to the Gifted Sir Larry...I'm trying my best to get the sound and fingering right and to the soulful and one and only Sir Nathan...My sister,Izabelle wld like to thank him for the pick and sends her hugs and butterfly kisses...!!!?????
Hope to see you all again masters.May the force of music be with you....... God bless.

An-young-ha-se-yo!!(Hello in Korean) My name is Hyesook from Seoul, Korea. Tonight I really enjoyed fourplay's third live in Seoul. It was extremely amazing!! (2005 live in Seoul was also Fantastic!) But on the concert end, I was just looking at the people shaking hands with you with envious eyes. (Gee, I was on the second floor!) By the way, I was very sorry that I missed your live in Seoul 2006. (At that time, I was in Canada.ㅜ.ㅜ) I'd appreciate it if you come again and play 'Play with Fire' and 'Love is Where'. I really love them! And I also L.O.V.E your magnificent play and humorous gesture you showed tonight. THANK YOU for your revisit to Korea and I hope you will be able to come again soon! Bob James is was the first Jazz artist I purchased when i decided to expand my love for different music. I never knew that Bob, has influenced so many Hip Hop artists and his music has been sampled so many times. While i have just about every Bob James recording, i am such a fan of Bob's first 3 albums, One, Two and Three. Women of Ireland is problably my favorite. Keep doin what cha doin'Bob, you are the man. Oh yeah, here's an Idea, Bob James does covers and re-arranges some hip hop songs for an album called " Bob Bites Back "..... I'd love to hear Bob James plays PM Dawn's " Set adrift on Memory Bliss. That would be awesome. Continued success to Bob James. No One plays the keys like BOB.

Mr Bob James,
Just thought that I let you know that I spent many a night studying for my BBA degree at Western Illinois U (Macomb, IL)during June 1980 until graduation in July 1983. Was introduced to your music after listening to a friend's tape (in particular, FARANDOLE), prior to leaving for USA. My all time hit favourite was KARI (with Earl Klugh)and also the theme from TAXI. Yes, its been a while. Hope that you can make the trip to Malaysia sometime. Since 3 (?) years ago, there is a Malaysian Rainforest Festival every year. The first ever Jazz festival in Kuala Lumpur was done in 1980 and it featured Sadao Watanabe. Sorry for being nostalgic, your songs brings back many memories during Undergraduate days at Western. My personal 'coup' was persuading WIUM to present '1 hour with Bob James'. This was sometime in late 1982. Unfortunately, after much wear, the 'live' taped radio recording went bust. Anyway, hope to source for these vintage hits on the net. God Bless.

"Good Vibes" Blessings and Greetings, Bob!
Just got your Urban Flamingo CD, and I love it! Congrats for another fine new music debut! I've been with you since the 1, 2, 3, 4, "Heads" and, yes, the "Hot Dog" album (Smile), to this present day! "Shepherd's Song" remains in my heart and soul. "Holla back" when you're near the 'Windy City' called Chicago! Much Love and Peace!

Mr. James I have fond memories of your music through a lot of periods of my life I really enjoyed all of your music ever since I was introduced to you in 1978. I think you are one of the most if not the most talented pianist I've heard. I can see why a lot of hip hop artists have sampled some of your music such as nautilus for example. It's very good to see you still twinkling the ivory all these years. I have most of your albums in it's original vinyl packages. But there is a lot that I don't have thanks to the invention of the C.D. But I'm glad to be a part of your website in a little way. Would be a dream to be in the studio with you just to observe. Thanks alot for your music.
Phazo from Columbus Ohio.

Bob,
I was raised on WJZZ in Detroit and saw many of your concerts at Meadowbrook and elsewhere with my dad when I was just a kid 25 years ago.
My dad died in 1995 but whenever I hear one of your songs (which is often), I think of the great moments with my father and the connection with your music.
I have XM Radio now and heard "Choose Me" for the first time and thought how my dad would've loved that song.
Your music makes me smile.
You are a true musical genius and I've already begun raising my granddaughter on Bob James jazz. Unlike many musicians, you're only getting better and better through the years.
I hope to see you in Southwest Florida sometime soon.

George Troupe - Monday, November 7th, 2005
I just got home from Fourplay's second night show here in Cape Town. I haven't been so knocked out since George Benson and Kenny G played together on stage here a few years ago! The artistry displayed tonight defies description, by all four members. We were lucky to witness this display of virtuosity being filmed for DVD. Now the big question is, how long do we have to wait for it's release? Great show Bob, a bargain at 10 times the price!

Best regards and safe travels,

Fantastic!

My first date with my now wife was to your 1978 San Diego concert.

I have been enjoying your music since the early 70's and have been fortunate to see you perform many times thru the years (last time in your hometown of Marshall Missouri in September 2004). Walt Young - Monday, May 14th, 2007

I would love for you to give me the benefit of your genius with regard to arranging in particular.....enough daydreaming, with best wishes,
Harris Playfair,

Continue inspiring.
reinimat - Monday, September 25th, 2006
This theme is interesting to me, and also
very important in work. Your site became my constant satellite!

The world is blessed to have wonderful artists like you. You have made me love the sound of the piano, especially when playing "Restless". I enjoy every note you play. Keep playing your music to make the world a better place.
South Africans enjoyed your show here.

I have been a fan of yours for years. I catch your show whenever you are in the Philadelphia area and believe me, I love every minute of it. I still play your first 12 albums as if they came out yesterday. It's all still good! Please, keep up the great music.
Mikhail Merican - Saturday, August 19th, 2006
Dear Sir,
Hello from Kuala Lumpur!

GOOD LUCK with fourplay's new album 'fourplay X'!

God Bless.

Bob,
I was raised on WJZZ in Detroit and saw many of your concerts at Meadowbrook and elsewhere with my dad when I was just a kid 25 years ago.

Bob James,
My name is Issac from Greensboro N.C. Let me say I am huge fan of you & the guys and I know about Larry Carlton since he know longer with the band of Fourplay. If need a new guitarist member to join is Jamie Walters he can be in your band of Fourplay soon until 2006. But I was wondering if you like to come to the event of the YWCA sunshine club on Nov. 18th 2005. at 6:30pm - 8;30pm if you can make it to Greensboro N.C. If you made it to the event of the Thanksgiving Dinner Celebration. If you bring some musicians to play a couple of songs which is "AFTER THE DANCE" feat. El DeBarge. Bobby you are the best piano ever. If can come & make it to the USA. New Empire of the Saturn is doing solo projects. So I know a lot of songs Bob. If you tell members of FOURPLAY of three of two of them. HELLO to them for me. Also George Benson. & Kenny G. I said hi for me. Please email me is go to www.yahoo.com
GOOD LUCK with your music.
I'll see you soon!

Thank you for an absolute brilliant show here in Cape Town (Nov 07) and for the special memories left behind. To you, Bob, one of my greatest pianists and composers, THANK YOU. Travel well to Bangkok and hope to see on our shores again.
